Secondary abstract:	This diploma thesis presents the basic characteristics and operations of the JPEG standard. Good and bad features of the standard are shown and explained. There is also a comparison with more recent types of JPEG standard (JPEG 2000). Special emphasis is placed on progressive and hierarchical model. This thesis also contains a detailed descriptions of JPEG models and also offers variety of practical examples created by our application. It also shows the other open source solutions for image compression.
