Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂeffect of lead and selenium on Berula erecta (Huds.) in in vitro conditions
Secondary abstract: There are many areas on Earth, including Slovenia, that are contaminated with lead. This is why, it is important to know which plant species are capable to survive in contaminated areas and could prove useful for phytoremediation of contaminated soil. Selenium has some beneficial effects on plants. The effect of exposure of Berula erecta to different concentrations of lead (Pb) and lead in interaction with selenium (Se) was measured through the determination of growth parameters, photochemical efficiency, content of photosynthetic pigments, anthocyanins, content of heavy metals and glutathione and cysteine in tissues. Plants grew in vitro in Murashige and Skoog medium with addition of 10 mg Pb ▫$L^{-1}$▫ and 50 mg Pb ▫$L^{-1}$▫ (as Pb(NO3)2) and also 10 mg Pb ▫$L^{-1}$▫ in interaction with 0,1 mg Se ▫$L^{-1}$▫ and 50 mg Pb ▫$L^{-1}$▫ in interaction with 0,1 mg Se ▫$L^{-1}$▫ (as Na2SeO3). Pb in both concentrations suppressed the height of plants, the development of new roots and the length of roots, but it stimulated the development of stolons and buds. The similar trends were observed in Pb in interaction with Se. By prolonging the exposure of B. erecta to Pb, its negative effects were more pronounced. Se improves the fitness of plants, according to the observed parameters (content of photosynthetic pigments, anthocyanins).
