Abstract

Magistrsko delo obravnava problematiko sodobnega časa, sobivanja generacij.

Secondary title: Architectural design of multigenerational neighbourhood
Secondary abstract: The master's thesis tackles a problem of the modern society, the co-existence of generations. Different generations tend to live separated lives more and more, this resulting in bigger contrasts and generation gap. There are residential areas appropriate only for the elderly built on one side and housing estates suitable only for young families on the other, leading to tensions affecting both population. With life expectancy almost doubling in the last 100 years, there are increasingly more active elderly people requiring that we adapt to their contemporary lifestyle. The elderly remain independent and the young aim to start their adult life. However, the issue has not been approached thoroughly enough, and it is known that we have started to deal with this problem too late. As co-existence has a lot more positive than negative aspects, we researched the present trends in Slovenia and what needs for good quality living each generation has. We tried to design the most optimal conditions for co-existence by means of urban and architectural solutions. We have chosen a location in Celje, a big grassy area between settlements Nova vas and Lava with a big potential for a multigenerational neighbourhood. In order to find optimal generational links, we need to establish what interests and activities are common to all generations. The analysis has revealed the most appropriate solutions for co-existence. In the master’s thesis we designed a multigenerational neighbourhood in the form of an elongated residential building which serves as a kind of a buffer zone between the surroundings and its multigenerational residents. Raising the buildings for one floor provides flood security. A big park designed next to the buildings offers peaceful living environment and opens the view of the entire Celje city centre and its surroundings. As an added value we introduce public recreational functions situated between the dwellings, offering even more opportunities for residents to socialize.
