Abstract

How the body structure of females who attend fitness centres is affected by knowledge and use of nutritional supplements |
Secondary abstract: |
The purpose of our research was to determine how well do females who attend fitness centres know nutritional supplements, how many of them use these supplements and in which way they affect their body structure. The research included 50 females of ages from 18 to 55 who attend various fitness centres in Ljubljana and its surroundings. Using a TANITA scale (Tanita, Innerscan body composition monitor, model BC-545, a six point measurement scale with magnetic impedance), we gathered information about body weight, bone mass, muscle mass, body fat percentage, visceral fat percentage, body water percentage, daily calorie expenditure, body type and organism vitality. The questionnaire gave us information regarding socio-demographic characteristics of females who exercise in fitness centres, frequency and length of fitness workouts and use and knowledge of nutritional supplements. The results were statistically analyzed with the SPSS program.
The results showed that most of the subjects do use nutritional supplements. There were no substantial differences found in body structure of women who use nutritional supplements and of those who don’t, therefore we cannot confirm a positive effect of nutritional supplements.
It was determined that the subjects have low or moderate knowledge of nutritional supplements which was interesting due to the fact that most of them use nutritional supplements. |
