Abstract

Secondary title: A possibility of school shooting of Slovenian high schools
Secondary abstract: Violence has always been present among teenagers as it represents a way of growing up, expressing power and sometimes even an element of survival in a wider society. Methods of violence change constantly and the concerning part is that they often lead to extreme crimes. Even in Slovenia violence among young people is getting worse. Let me just point out the stabbing that occurred on the main bus station in Novo mesto a few years ago (I. V.,2014). One of the most extreme forms of violence that occurs among teens are high school shootings. However, since we usually hear about them from foreign media, we believe the problem to be far removed from our home environment. We often forget that we live in the age where the ways we communicate (internet, social networks, violent video games,...) can lead to this kind of problems. Young people get too involved in virtual friendships and they lose contact with reality. Therefore it is important to be aware that these kinds of attacks can occur even in Slovenia. Furthermore, teenagers are constantly in touch with violence through media, which also raises the chances of a shooting occurring in our country. We must stay alert for defiant behaviour and possible threats and take them all in consideration, because that way we can stop a possible crime from happening. That is why teachers, social workers and law enforcement must pay attention to behavioural signs that can lead to criminal acts. A lot of attention is required to recognize signs of depression, stress, abuse, bad social and family situations..., and all factors that point to individual’s potential trauma. The research has shown that teens in Dolenjska region are witnesses to all kinds of violence and that a lot of them happen in public schools. Teenagers use both physical and psychological violence, and they also have access to weapons – a fact which indicates an even greater threat for more extreme crimes.
