Abstract

Secondary title: The use of ergonomical assistive devices in nursing homes
Secondary abstract: Employees of various professions often suffer because of body defects as a result of workloads. Healthcare workers are a professional group, who suffer, according to many researchers, due to the heavy physical burden that is present in the care of patients. They are severely compromised by the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders. Ergonomics is a science that studies the effects of work on humans – including the nursing profession. A number of ergonomic technical devices are already available, but we have raised the question of how many employees in health care actually use them. For the research environment we have selected nursing homes with a large number of users – residents who depend completely on the help of employees. We tried to determine whether employees in nursing homes use ergonomic technical devices at work and what are the possible reasons for their non-use. The empirical part of the master's thesis is based on a survey carried out in nursing homes of the Gorenjska region. Two questionnaires were designed for the survey, the first being for health care and care managers in social welfare institutions, and the other for nursing staff in nursing homes, namely for registered nurses and nursing assistants. We have found that the nursing homes are adequately equipped with ergonomic technical devices, that employees are educated about their use and they know how to use them - nevertheless, we found a significantly lower use than other (especially foreign) researchers. Employees use ergonomic technical devices only in one quarter of cases where the use would be meaningful and necessary. The most common reason for not using the devices is the lack of time that is due to inadequate staffing norms.
