Abstract

Elektronski sistemi za varovanje knjižničnega gradiva skozi čas niso razvili kakšne nove revolucionarne metode, zato varovanje z radiofrekvenčno identifikacijo in elektromagnetnimi varnostnimi nalepkami še danes ostajata glavni varovalni tehniki v knjižnicah.

Secondary title: Library material protection, using radio frequency identification system and a system based on electromagnetic technology
Secondary abstract: Security measures employed for protection of library material are crucial in preserving cultural heritage. Throughout history, development of books and libraries also led to theft of library items, which still causes substantial difficulties to libraries. Electronic systems for protection of library items have not developed any new revolutionary methods, therefore radio frequency identification and electromagnetic safety labels remain the main security devices used by libraries. Historical data in literature show that theft of library items is not a new thing. When reviewing development of the security methods for libraries - from the most primitive ones, such as the so-called ‘book damnation’, to modern electronic systems, we find that modern systems have substantially reduced the rate of theft in libraries. The very presence of security systems and visible security warning signs discourage unauthorized removal of library items. However, protection of library items can not be guaranteed only by use of electronic security systems due to their incomplete reliability, which has been confirmed by some of the providers of certain systems. In order to maximize protection of library items, other security measures and arrangements must be employed, such as security cameras and library security personnel, or cooperation with private security companies. Rate of theft may also be reduced by asking patrons to store their personal items in wardrobes or lockers. Involvement of library personnel is also essential for the safety of library items, which need to be preserved for future generations.
