magistrsko delo
Abstract
Frazemi so tako v slovenščini kot v angleščini pogosto prisotni v našem vsakdanjem življenju. So izrazi, ki bogatijo naš jezik in jih najdemo tako v umetnostnih besedilih kot tudi v vsakdanji komunikaciji. Vendar je razumevanje frazemov v primerjavi z ostalimi besedami in besednimi zvezami velikokrat težje, saj so večinoma rabljeni v prenesenem pomenu.

Understanding of Slovene and English idioms of Slovenian students in the 5th, 7th and 9th grade |
Secondary abstract: |
Idioms, both in English and Slovene language, are commonly used in our everyday lives. They are fixed expressions that liven up our language and can be found in literary texts and in general everyday communication. In comparison with other words or groups of words, idioms can be much more difficult to understand because of their figurative meaning. We can come across numerous idioms in Slovene and English cartoons, movies and books. They are also used in textbooks, workbooks and Slovenian national exams. The understanding of idioms is essential for pupils; therefore, in this master's thesis, we checked how common idioms (Slovene and English) are at school and how many of them are students of 5th, 7th and 9th grade able to understand. We only used idioms with figurative meaning. Our main interest was to find the differences in understanding the idioms according to their age, to the type of an idiom and the language used in it. The analysis of the tests showed the importance of age for understanding the meaning. Younger students had more troubles with understanding both types of idioms (Slovene and English) than older students. However, even older students struggled with English idioms because they did not understand their meaning. These findings confirmed our expectations - students have more difficulties with understanding English idioms than Slovene idioms. Primary school teachers and English teachers stated in their interviews that not enough idioms are used at school. There should be emphasis on understanding both, Slovene and English, idioms in order to widen students' vocabulary. |
