Galassia sigaro nell'ultravioletto

Abstract

Looking at the pinking of a sky at sunset we see a delicate impressionist watercolor or rather the spectacular effect of the refraction of the sun on the particles of the atmosphere? Can the extraordinary geometries of the cubic lattices of a salt crystal be considered a perfect composition deserving of admiration like a cubist painting? All the "infinite forms, ever more beautiful and wonderful" of life, as defined by the famous naturalist Charles Darwin, are art or science? The Art or Science photo contest? was born to emphasize the contamination between these two fields, only apparently distant, of human knowledge, exalting the beauty of scientific research and rewarding the photographic talent of those who work in science. The 2017 edition of the competition, conceived and promoted by the University of Trieste and Immaginario Scientifico, has collected 116 images of students and scientists from universities and research institutions. Among these were selected 30 photos, exhibited from 18 to 23 September 2017 in Trieste, at Palazzo Costanzi, as part of the Trieste Next-Festival of Scientific Research.

Secondary abstract:	Guardando il tingersi di rosa di un cielo al tramonto vediamo un delicato acquerello impressionista o piuttosto lo spettacolare effetto della rifrazione del sole sulle particelle dell’atmosfera? Possono le straordinarie geometrie dei reticoli cubici di un cristallo di sale, essere considerate una composizione perfetta e meritevole di ammirazione al pari di un dipinto cubista? Tutte le «infinite forme, sempre più belle e meravigliose» della vita, così come le definiva il celebre naturalista Charles Darwin, sono arte o scienza? Il concorso fotografico Arte o Scienza? nasce per enfatizzare le contaminazioni tra questi due campi, solo apparentemente distanti, dello scibile umano, esaltando il bello della ricerca scientifica e premiando il talento fotografico di chi opera in ambito scientifico. L’edizione 2017 del concorso, ideato e promosso da Università di Trieste e Immaginario Scientifico, ha raccolto 116 immagini di studenti e scienziati di Università ed Enti di ricerca. Fra queste sono state selezionate 30 foto, esposte dal 18 al 23 settembre 2017 a Trieste, a Palazzo Costanzi, nell’ambito di Trieste Next-Festival della Ricerca Scientifica.
