Abstract

Secondary title: Views of the elderly to suicide
Secondary abstract: A well-known position among the elderly is that no one can stop a person who attempts to commit suicide and is already determined to do so. In my opinion this view is incorrect. Most suicidal people do not want to actually die, but they only seek for help and support to solve their distress. The problem is that suicide is still a rearly discussed taboo topic. Nobody wants to be exposed, so rarely anyone is looking for suitable help. In the master's thesis we examined the views of the elderly to suicide. We were interested in what risk factors, according to the elderly, lead to suicidal thoughts, and if opinions differ according to gender. We also studied the awareness of the elderly about suicide prevention programs and the knowledge of organizations that deal with the topic of suicide. The survey contained several questions that related to the opinion of respondents on the elderly who committed suicide and if men or women are more susceptible to suicide. We were also interested if respondents know someone who committed a suicide after 65 years of age, if they had thought about commiting a suicide and how to do it and if they actually tried to do it. Surveys were solved in physical form because most of the elderly do not use the Internet, so the online questionnaire did not come into consideration. The study showed that depression and other mental disorders are considered the most frequent risk factor that affects the elderly's suicidal thoughts. Respondents shared opinion that elderly who committed suicide are in unstable mental health. They also think that the elderly are under-aware of suicide prevention programs. On the basis of statistical data, we suggest that we inform elderly more about possibilities where they can resort in case of suicidal thoughts or tendencies.
