Abstract

New trends in building barns for dairy cows and young stock and possibilities to reduce the frequency of hoof trimming |
Secondary abstract: |
In Slovenia, the construction of new barns for cattle is done by modern systems of building and cutting-edge equipment of European and world standards. The reasons for this originates in the fact that the decision for modernization or construction of new stables comes mainly from farmers, who are familiar with new trends and developments in the construction of stables. In the first part of the thesis, we introduce certain trends in the construction of barns for dairy cows and young cattle. In the second part of the thesis, we have, in the context of our own work, designed several innovative types of devices and floors that would solve, or at least reduce, the problems of insufficient wear of hooves, namely: electrical device with abrasive cylinders that would turn on automatically and grind and wear hooves every time the cow steps on them; type of floor with larger free rotating spheres and the fixed hemispheres with a grinding surface, where cows would wear and grind the hooves while spontaneously walking through the transitional corridors paved with this type of floor. We assume that we would achieve completely functional wear of hooves with the type of floor with fixed larger and smaller abrasive hemispheres and at the same time actually enrich cow’s environment in the barn. The cost of this type of floor per m2 would not be significantly higher than the currently available commercial grates, but would significantly contribute to improving the welfare of cows, especially to the health of hooves. We have also devised a type of thickened grinding plate for the care of hooves, with which breeders could perform majority of preventive correction of hooves, which the currently available grinding plates do not allow. |
