Abstract

Secondary title: Analysis of small ruminant protection methods against the attacks of large carnivores
Secondary abstract: Permanent problematics arising from coexistence between humans and large carnivores cause damage on small ruminants that bears, but even more wolfs, are responsible for. The aim of this B. Sc. is to analyse ways to protect small ruminants from large carnivore attacks and investigate the effectiveness, shortcomings and weaknesses of each guarding system. Aiming to preserve both large carnivores and herds of small ruminants, which have a significant meaning in preserving cultivated land from being overgrown, we analysed different means of protection: fences (temporary and fixed electric fences, massive fences), shepherd dogs, shepherds, mixed herds and protection with different repellents. Analysis of these systems showed that we still do not know a guarding system that would provide 100% protection rate against large carnivore attacks. Combining different ways of protection causes a coeffect that lessens the possibility of a carnivore break in the pasture, but every protective system has shortcomings that show up in specific situations in nature.
