Abstract

Secondary abstract: This Phd-Thesis discusses inventory and use of particles (i.e. linguistic units, modifying the meaning of a particular part of a text or connecting parts of a text in a sense of meaning) in different text types and other material in all four variants of the Slovene standard language between 17th and 19th centuries. Appropriate attention is devoted to temporally, regionally and textually arranged differences in the inventory and use of particles. The analysis of the use of particles includes semantic, syntactic and pragmatic analysis and distinction between particles and other functional words (i.e. conjunctions, adverbs, interjections and prepositions). It is based on functional classification of particles, according to which particles are divided into modal (with mood), emphatic, cohesive, temporal, modal-emphatic, modal-cohesive, emphatic-cohesive, temporal-modal and temporal-cohesive particles. The analysis also touches typological division of particles into true particles (i.e. particles as parts of speech) and functional particles (i.e. other parts of speech and syntactically higher linguistic units, functioning as particles).
