Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂeffect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on delayed onset muscle soreness
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Delayed onset muscle soreness is defined as a type of muscle injury resulting from increased muscle activity, which differs from muscle fatigue or pain occurring during the exercise and loading of the muscle. Its symptoms are muscle stiffness, soreness or pain during active movement and weakness of the afflicted muscle. Probable causes of the delayed onset muscle soreness are micro-tears in the muscle fibres. As delayed onset muscle soreness can hinder further trainings or even affect the results of professional athletes, different therapeutic methods have been proposed for its prevention or at least alleviation. One such method is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, where the patient is exposed to increased atmospheric pressure while inhaling 100% oxygen. This therapy is based on gas laws as well as physiological and biochemical effects of hyperoxia. Purpose: The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to review the existing literature and evaluate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on delayed onset muscle soreness through critical analysis of research methods and results. Method: The thesis was conceived as a literature review. We used MedLine, PubMed and Google Scholar internet databases to find papers on the topic of the thesis, published after 1990. The list was narrowed down to the papers in English language focusing on delayed onset muscle soreness in humans. Results: Literature search in the MedLine, PubMed and Google Scholar internet databases revealed only 6 papers that met all the criteria for inclusion in this thesis. Discussion and conclusion: Most of the studies found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not an efficient method for treatment of delayed onset muscle soreness. However, almost all studies include individual results indicating that hyperbaric oxygen therapy does have some effect on delayed onset muscle soreness.
