Abstract

Secondary title: The importance of palliative care in institutional care
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Palliative care is a holistic care of a seriously ill person, which with its approach improves the quality of life the terminally ill. The purpose of this master's thesis is to highlight the importance of palliative care in institutional care facilities, and to establish self-assessment of the knowledge and attitude of employees towards palliative care through the research. Research methods: Quantitative research methodology was used. The data collection instrument was a structured questionnaire. The survey included 174 employees from four social care institutions. With the SPSS program, we carried out the basic descriptive analyzes, the differences between the averages of the groups were compared with the Mann-Whitney U independent sample test. Results: The research shows that employees often face seriously ill and dying patients. At work, they are sufficiently confident to carry out palliative care, with 56 % of respondents assessing their knowledge as good or very good. 84 % of respondents state that they miss the possibility of 24-hour access to organized palliative care or consultations with the palliative care team. They are motivated to receive new competences and responsibilities related to palliative care in 87 %. The survey also shows that there are no statistical differences in relation to palliative care among those employed in an institution with a palliative team and those employed in an institution that does not have such a team. Discussion and conclusion: The survey showed that employees estimate that they have sufficient knowledge, mostly acquired through internal lectures and practice. Palliative care is an important topic in the process of educating health workers and coworkers at all levels of education and at all levels of health care, therefore continuous professional education is needed.
