Abstract

Ugotavljanje potreb svojcev pacientov z nezgodno poškodbo glave je v družino usmerjen pristop skrbi, s končnim ciljem aktivne vloge pacientov in svojcev v doseganju ravni zdravja.

Secondary title: Family needs after traumatic brain injury
Secondary abstract: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a devastating injury for both patients and their family members therefore it is important to identify their needs to help them to actively participate in recovery process. The goal of this study was to identify the needs of patients’ family members and changing of these needs as patients with severe TBI progress through their recovery. This study used a qualitative approach with semi-structured interview. Ten family members, one per patient, participated in our study. But in the final analysis we included answers only from seven family members because two patients died before the end of our study and one patient’s hospital recovery exceeded the study time frame. Family members of patients with TBI identified a variety of needs which could be changing during the acute hospitalization period. Two major needs were the need for information and the need for professional support. These two needs were constantly present and were only slightly modified during hospitalization. At the time of TBI and shortly thereafter family members first needed to confront the injury and all its aspects. In that process they went through different phases – shock, denial, negotiation, anger, sadness, fear. Towards the end of hospitalization family members expressed the needs for certainty and progress. With this study we identified the most important needs of families whose members had TBI. According to our results Slovenian health care workers who come in contact with family members of patients with TBI should be given a sense of empowerment especially in the fields of identifying the needs, communication and involvement of family members as equal partners in patient health care.
