Abstract

Secondary title: Helping a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
Secondary abstract: Introduction: The attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is considered the most common disorder that impedes psychosocial functionality in the child's developmental period. It is characterised by three basic symptoms: reduced attention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. The interplay of genetic and environmental factors is responsible for the occurrence of the disorder. Half of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have at least one parent with this disorder. Symptoms of disorder affect the child's overall functioning in the cognitive, academic, emotional, social and behavioural fields. The attention deficit hyperactivity disorder affects 3-5% of the school population. The complexity of the problems caused by the disorder encourages us to explore effective ways to help the child and his family. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to present various forms of assistance to a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and his family. Moreover, its purpose is to investigate the role of a nurse in providing assistance. Methods of approach: In the thesis, the descriptive method of approach was used. Literature was sought through digital library databases. Results: Effective ways to help a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are psychosocial approaches in family and school environments, a healthy lifestyle and simultaneously treatment with medicines in a more severe disorder. Families of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have a significantly higher level of family dysfunction. A nurse plays an important role in helping the child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and his family. Discussion and conclusion: Psychosocial approaches in the family and school environments do not only reduce the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. They help children and parents to develop skills to cope with problems, on which they can rely. They are also focused on the quality of life. In more severe course of symptoms, pharmacological treatment is recommended, which is often rejected due to parents' distrust and side effects. The disorder has a significant impact on family life and relationships between family members. The help of a nurse should be focused on the child, parents and other family members and on the establishment and maintenance of good interpersonal relationships. Nurses should raise awareness about the disorder and thus reduce the stigma. Moreover, their activity should focus on encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
