Abstract

Secondary title: Understanding a Buddhist patient in nursing
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Religion and spirituality have always played a key role in human life and have an important impact on health care and consequently on the health of every individual. In today's time, full of large population migrations and continual changes in all areas of life, healthcare professionals are compelled to cope with and meet new challenges and impacts on their work brought by globalization. All these adaptations and new skills are particularly important for nurses as the main pillar of patient care. Purpose: The purpose is to present the main facts and beliefs of the patients of the Buddhist religion, which will enable the nurses to provide religiously competent, holistic health care. We will focus on the presentation of the main aspects of Buddhism and the possible religious needs of the patient, which are translated into the chosen lifestyle. By doing so, they would improve communication and more competent implementation of medical care interventions, thus facilitating work for nurses. Methods: In the diploma work, we used a descriptive approach with a thorough thematic literature review. Inclusion criteria for the search were articles published between 2006 and 2017, written in English and accessible in full text. Literature was searched with keywords in bibliographic databases CINAHL, MEDLINE and ScienceDirect. Results: Here we have presented the main beliefs and habits of the Buddhist patients. We focused on potential deviations in the treatment of the patient of a Buddhist religion, according to the established practice of nursing care in our country, regarding the entire treatment process of such a patient and the most important basic life activity. Discussion and conclusion: It has been proven that taking into account the patient's religious needs and applying them to all life's activities during medical treatment can affect the quality of care and better treatment outcomes. By presenting and approximating the main characteristics and differences in the patients' religious beliefs, we helped to better understand the nurses in this field and consequently enable a better treatment of the patient of Buddhist religion.
