magistrsko delo
Abstract
V magistrskem delu smo s pomočjo Slovarja slovenskih frazemov Janeza Kebra (2011) želeli raziskati angleške prevode slovenskih frazemov, ki jih avtor navaja v omenjenem slovarju.

Slovene idioms and their English equivalents in the Janez Keberʹs Dictianary of Slovene Idioms |
Secondary abstract: |
In the master thesis, we wanted to find out more about the English translations of Slovene idioms, using the Janez Keber's Dictionary of Slovene Idioms (Slovar slovenskih frazemov). In the analysis, we used the seven categories by Mona Baker (2011), however, we only used four of them because of the circumstances (lack of context). Out of all the 450 examples that have an English equivalent included in the dictionary, we chose 80 examples in alphabetical order that have an interesting data on their origin, synonyms etc. We used descriptive and comparative methods - the first one for describing the Slovene idioms and the second one for comparison of the Slovene idioms with their English equivalents. Based on the English translations, we divided the idioms into four categories: (1) using an idiom of similar meaning and form, (2) using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, (3) translation by paraphrase and (4) translation by omission of the entire idiom. In each case we explained why we decided to put each idiom into a certain category, after which we analysed both examples (based on the meaning, origin, synonyms in both languages etc.). |
