Abstract

Secondary title: Spreading of severe hop stunt disease in Slovenia
Secondary abstract: Common hops (Humulus lupulus L.) is a parennial in the family Cannabaceae. We produce it in multiannual plantations called hopfields. Male plants are used for breeding, while female plants have commercial value as they are used in the brewing industry. The most widespread cultivars cultivated in Slovenia are ‘Savinjski golding’, ‘Aurora’, ‘Bobek’, and ‘Celeia’. For the last 5 years hops is grown in approximately 1500 ha of active hopfields. Hop production has been threatened since 2007 by Citrus bark cracking viroid (CBCVd). The disease causes severe stunting and death of affected plants. It spreads mainly mechanically and with remains of infected plants. The purpose of my thesis is to show, how the disease has spread in the period 2011-2017 in Slovenia on individual infected farms and on plantations of different varieties of hops as well. Results have shown that the areas of infected hop fields and the number of infected farms in Slovenia, progress annually. We found that extended outbreaks and disease progression was present in the cultivars, ‘Bobek’, ‘Celeia’ and ‘Aurora’. The slowest disease progression has been found out in the variety ‘Savinjski golding’.
