Abstract

Secondary title: Perception of masculinity among young men in Slovenia
Secondary abstract: Social changes in the postmodern era, have lead to changes and a new perception of gender identities and gender roles. Gender is a socially constructed identity, a concept that changes through time and space. A growing detachment from the traditional perception of masculinity, as well as a change in the relation between the hegemonic masculinity on one side, and other masculinities and women on the other, came as a result of the increasing pluralisation of lifestyles and the growth of feminist and gay movements. New, alternative forms of masculinity also affect men's position in the private sphere - they lead to new forms of fatherhood, changes in relationships and friendships, different attitude towards men's intimacy, emotions and sexuality. At the same time, young men find themselves at an intersection between traditional qualities, internalized through socialization, and a new emphasis on masculinity, increasingly imposed on them by society. An in-depth qualitative research can give an insight into the perception of individual's gender identities, question the effects on the construction and transformation of these identities and, consequently, recognize the presence of traditional and/or new perceptions of masculinity among young men. The perception of the concept of masculinity among young men - taking into account the changes occuring in the postmodern society – has a strong influence on modern gender hierarchy and modern gender relations.
