magistrsko delo
Abstract

Secondary abstract: |
The aim of this master thesis was to examine the relation between internet usage frequency and social media usage frequency, and obesity and lack of physical activity among youth in Slovenia. The theoretical part focuses on the definition of basic concepts such as youth, mass media, obesity and leisure time. With statistical data of internet usage and social media we showed the role of new media in the life of youth. Furthermore, we examined one of the most problematic issues of today's society - obesity among young people. Master thesis presents several studies between often use of internet, obesity and lack of physical activity, as well as the relationship between social media usage frequency, obesity and lack of physical activity. Hypothesis are based on scientific literature are examined and analyzed in empirical part based on the data of Mladina 2010 research. Results show that, frequently usage of internet is not statistically distinctive related to obesity, neither to lack of physical activity. Moreover, frequently usage of social media is also not statistically related to obesity or reduction of physical activity frequency. This results show the complexity of relation. One of the reasons for those results is that the youth use internet and social media with a certain purpose, such as having fun or chatting, and are therefore paying less attention to unhealthy food and drinks commercials. Therefore, advertising is not raising the index of body weight. Besides, healthy life and the importance of increased physical activity in schools get more attention in advertising and everyday life, which perhaps influences youth in Slovenia. However, there is a rising question, whether there would be different results if we have possessed up to date data of internet usage and social media usage among youth in Slovenia. |
