Abstract

To sta oznaki »Izbrana kakovost« in »Najbolj inovativna živila«.

Secondary title: Knowledge of primary school student of signs for quality on food packaging
Secondary abstract: A balanced diet is extremely important for a consumer’s health. We know that in today’s deluge of information and with all the food labels specifying domestic, seasonal, local, organic, biological food, it is hard to select food and to know which foodstuffs really are high quality. Food labels can facilitate our selection. It is very important to know the labels, because they can help an individual select the appropriate foodstuff. In addition to the basic labels, there are different quality marks on the food packaging as well, which usually label high quality products. This diploma thesis aims to find out to what extent are students of 6th and 9th grade familiar with the selected new quality marks. These are Izbrana kakovost (meaning “Selected quality”) and Najbolj inovativna živila (“Most innovative foodstuffs”). Izbrana kakovost is a mark labeling foodstuffs that have been produced and processed in Slovenia. The products carry special features which are defined by certifying bodies and written down in the specifications. Najbolj inovativna živila is an ongoing project, which has started in 2015. Based on certain criteria, experts select foodstuffs which the producers declared on a tender. This tender is intended for products produced in Slovenia that have been newly introduced to the market. With the group interview method, the results of the survey have shown that students are acquainted with the basic features of Izbrana kakovost and Najbolj inovativna živila marks. They are more familiar with the Izbrana kakovost mark since it is easier to spot on the product than the Najbolj inovativna živila mark. With the latter, the producers themselves can decide whether their product will carry the mark or not. There was no detectable difference in the knowledge of students of 6th and of 9th grade. The results also suggest that the students of 6th grade have more knowledge about the basics of food labeling. Given the results, it would be useful to consider moving the subject of home economics into the curriculum of the upper grades of primary school.
