Abstract

Secondary title: Effect of different methods of egg disinfection on hatchability of chickens
Secondary abstract: The aim of the present research was to study the effect of different disinfectants on selected hatchability parameters (fertility, egg weight loss, embryonal mortality, hatchability, hatchling weight and sex ratio) in chickens. The experiment was divided in two parts. In the first part, 3.600 fertile eggs from layer parent stock flock were randomly divided into 8 equal groups and sprayed with distilled water (negative control) and solutions of 10 % NaCl, 96 % ethanol, 7 % propolis, 0,5 % Ecocide S and 3 % H2O2. In addition, one group of eggs was fumigated with formaldehyde gas and one group was used as control and was not disinfected. In the second part of the experiment, we distributed 3.150 fertile eggs of layer type breeders among control group and 6 sanitizing treatments: 3 %, 5 %, 7 % solutions of H2O2 and 0,5 %, 1 %, 2 % solutions of Ecocid S. Undisinfected eggs represented a control group. In each group 150 eggs were individually weighed and chicks were separately hatched and weighed. Hatchability of eggs set was significantly lower in NaCl and propolis groups as compared to H2O2, formaldehyde, Ecocid S and control groups. Hatchability values of set eggs were as follows: 36,1 % (NaCl) and 16,2 % (propolis). There were no significant differences neither between H2O2, formaldehyde, Ecocid S and control groups in the first part of the research nor between groups with different concentrations of H2O2 and Ecocid S in the second part of the research in terms of egg weight loss, hatchling weight, sex ratio, fertility, hatchability of fertile eggs and hatchability of incubated eggs. Egg weight losses from incubation to 18 days were significantly lower in groups where eggs were sprayed with alcohol solutions (ethanol, propolis dissolved in alcohol). It seems that 3 % H2O2 can be a good alternative to formaldehyde gas for disinfection of fertile chicken eggs.
