Abstract

Secondary abstract: Through history, the city of Jerusalem has played a vital role between three Abrahamic religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. It represents the holy city for all three religions and it has a special culture-historical significance, representing their juncture and peaceful coexistence in mutual tolerance. Unfortunately, Jerusalem lies in the centre of Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with both sides having their claims over the city because of its position. Both want it as their capital city, with neither are willing to concede. Even when long-lasting negotiations move in the right direction, in the end, everything falls apart, may it be the public opinion, external pressures (opening of embassies in the city), with both protagonists finding each other on opossite sides. This diploma thesis will try to present the legal status of Jerusalem in the most unbiased way possible. It is considered disputable in the international community, subjected to different interpretations and at the mercy of the ever-changing governing elites, both home and abroad. It will especially examine the decision of American president Donald Trump to move American embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, which escalated the existing tensions in this region and aggrevated feeble peace between the two main actors.
