diplomsko delo

Abstract

Secondary abstract: In my dissertation I analysed Seneca's play Medea and made a comparison with Euripides' version, due to the known fact that Seneca often followed his example. I was focusing on similarities and differences between the two plays, taking in consideration not only their contents but also the language. Seneca was probably familiar with the works of Ovid. I particularly set out the most important verses that had influenced the creating of the Seneca's Medea. I summarised the myth of Argonauts which is crucial for understanding of the play, for it is upon the content of this story that Medea was based. After the comparison of the Latin and Greek version, I analysed the characters which vary greatly from one author to another. Seneca reduced the number of characters, he altered their personalities and relations between them. He also changed Medea's primary reason for taking revenge on Jason. Towards the end of my dissertation, I represented the evolution of the Roman theatre - it was relocated at the beginning of the Christian era to more private places where the plays were read not played. Finally, I took a closer look at the Meta Hočevar's play which is the first Slovenian staging of this Seneca's closet drama.
