diplomsko delo
Abstract

Evaluation of knowledge about first aid among sport climbers |
Secondary abstract: |
Introduction: Sport climbing converged from the alpinism and became present in Slovenia in the beginning of the 1980. It can be divided into bouldering or lead climbing (either in the rocks or gyms) and multi-pitch climbing. The interest for the sport has grown rapidly in the recent years. Consequently, the number of injuries has increased. It is extremely important that the competitors and the pedagogic personnel are able to competently give the first aid in case of accidents that lead to injuries. Purpose: To evaluate the knowledge about first aid for the most common types of climbing injuries among the pedagogic personnel or Sport climbers Level 1 certified at Alpine Association of Slovenia. Methods: The descriptive method was used. The data acquisition was done with the use of questionnaire that was distributed through social networks across Slovenia. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 288 participants (191 of Sport Climbers Level 1 and 97 of those from the pedagogic group). 85 % of those from pedagogic group and 75 % of Sport Climbers, are familiar with the correct first aid measures in case of getting hit. 31 % of all questionnaire participants would add ice and compression to immobilization measure in case of a broken humerus. In case of dealing with unconscious person that breathes, 61 % of Sport Climbers and 75 % of those from pedagogic group would only call the emergency (112) without applying any other first aid measures. Discussion and conclusion: Both groups proved that their knowledge about first aid is sufficient. The participants from pedagogic group were more successful compared to the Sport Climbers. Certain areas of first aid are well known to both groups, such as wound and contusion care. The lowest level of knowhow was identified in the area of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and measures related to the unconscious person that breathe and is suspected to have the spine injury. In general, the knowhow about first aid plays an important role as it enables individuals to identify the type of injury and to take the appropriate first aid measures, which reduce the overall rehabilitation time. It would make strong sense to also evaluate the practical knowledge about first aid among both groups. |
