diplomsko delo

Abstract

Secondary title: Problematic cases of comma use in journalistic texts on website www.rtvslo.si
Secondary abstract: This thesis focuses on the cases of comma use that, spelling-wise, caused the most significant dilemmas. The sentences are taken from journalistic texts extracted from the website of the national radio and television, ie. Multimedia Centre. The work leans both on normative handbooks as well as relevant publications of historical and recent linguistic discussions concerning the correct usage of the comma and questions connected to such usage. These discussion are strictly tied to correct comma usage and the most common questions concerning such usage. The thesis also contains an overview of the theoretical bases of comma usage contained within normative handbooks, since in practice they apparently do not solve ever-newer dilemmas. The biggest dilemmas and/or inconsistencies are to do with comma usage within compound sentences, where the issue is separating dependent clauses. The second category of dilemmas are multi-verbal single-object conjugates, while the third is the question of adversatives, when they are expressed only with a conjunction and negation. In addition, individual cases have been added, which can be addressed more than just syntactically, and which further demonstrate the need for a renewed consideration regarding the entire discussion surrounding the comma's positioning in the future.
