Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂimportance of Janko Ravnik in Slovenian piano pedagogy
Secondary abstract: Janko Ravnik set foundations of piano teaching at the Conservatory of Glasbena matica in Ljubljana in 1919. He was renown as a superb teacher who with his knowledge, enthisiasm and charisma fascinated the most gifted young Slovene piano players. Among the most prominent students attending his classes were his brother Anton Ravnik, Zora Zarnik, Pavel Šivic, Marijan Lipovšek, Hilda Horak, Igor Dekleva Zdenka Novak and Tanja Zrimšek, who after studying abroad became Slovene leading artists and piano teachers at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana. They used different methods of piano teaching and had different opinions on piano techique and interpretation. However, the foundations of Slovenian piano pedagogy are based on Janko Ravnik's work. Besides being a piano teacher, Janko Ravnik was also a composer. I have placed his work alongside his students Pavel Šivic and Marijan Lipovšek, who were also composers, piano teachers and Ravnik's long term colleagues at the Academy for Music in Ljubljana.
