Abstract

World wide web as the source of information in criminal investigation |
Secondary abstract: |
Acquiring information with the help of the internet has been present since its invention. It is in fact its primary function. This is precisely why investigators started using its advantages as well. They use the internet to investigate criminal offences done with the help of a computer, most common offences of this type being internet fraud and information system hacking. They also use it to investigate regular criminal offences such as human trafficking and child pornography where criminals leave traces and evidence crucial for the discovery of the offences on the internet. Recently, there has been a growth in the use of “the deep web” where acquiring information is made even harder since complete anonymity is prevalent there. When we talk about the internet we cannot ignore social media that have become a staple in our lives and a real treasure trove of information. People do not even realise what they publish on social media since they are given a sense of security and anonymity by safely sitting behind a computer screen. Social media have, because of their easy accessibility, started being used by various extremists and terrorists for the recruitment of new members.
The ones that find the information on the internet the most helpful are police officers and criminal investigators. The largest amount of knowledge in this field is held by the investigators and criminal investigators of the Computer Crime Section where they make sure all the information and devices are properly seized and processed for a due taking of evidence in court. Since the World Wide Web does not know country borders, international police cooperation is crucial; in Slovenia, this is taken care of by the International Police Cooperation Division. |
