Abstract

Secondary title: Laboratory investigation on contact efficacy of various types of wood ashes against slugs (Arion spp., Gastropoda, Arionidae)
Secondary abstract: Slugs are classified as an economically important species which can cause significant damage to cultivated plants. The yield loss can be seen in areas where field crops, vegetable crops, fruit crops and herbs are grown. Due to extensive damage caused by the year’s long reproduction of slugs, the farmers and hobby farmers often use limacides. Some of these chemicals may be dangerous to people, homeothermic animals, fish and other animals, even beneficial organisms. By raising awareness on the harmful effects of synthetically produced pesticides, farmers and the rest of the public have significantly increased the demands for alternative means and measures of slug control. One of such means is wood ash. In our experiment, the effects of different types of wood ash have been studied on their contact efficacy against slugs. Four types of wood ash (beech, oak, fir, spruce) have been investigated. Changes in slugs' nourishment, body mass and rates of mortality have been thoroughly studied while rolling the slugs in the ashes. Besides the afore mentioned parameters, the obstacle test which included the crossing of the obstacle was performed. The best contact efficacy has been determined with the use of oak ash. Oak ash also caused the highest mortality of the slugs. The least effective was the beech ash, as it doesn't affect the nourishment of the slugs, nor does it divert them or has lethal effects.
