Abstract

Secondary title: Understanding of the deep and dark web in Slovenia
Secondary abstract: Nowadays, almost everyone uses a computer, mobile phone and other smart devices whether it be for communication, entertainment or business related matters. Consequently, there are more users of the web each day due to the demands for online content, which is becoming more desirable and more popular. Contents are increasingly moving to the web because they can be accessed there easily and anywhere. To access them, we only need an internet connection and a device which enables this access. Surface web, or the web that we use every day, does not represent the whole World Wide Web, only the top layer of it. In addition to the surface web, we also know the deep and dark web, which are less known, hidden and less accessible. This diploma thesis will uncover what the deep and dark web consist of, and establish if we can find only legal or perhaps also illegal contents in this part of the web. There will be more details about browsers with which we can access these contents, most notably TOR – The Onion Router, which guarantees the appropriate level of anonymity and privacy. In addition, Bitcoin cryptocurrency, which is the main method of payment in this part of the web, will be discussed. In the practical part of the thesis, we will investigate whether Slovenians know the domain of the deep and dark web or have they never heard about it. This section will also give the reader an idea for what purposes the users of the deep and dark web use this part of the World Wide Web and how safe they feel while browsing. The research was done with the help of a questionnaire which was distributed among random interviewees. The intention of this diploma thesis is to present and expand the knowledge of the readers about this mysterious part of the World Wide Web.
