Abstract

Secondary title: Self-esteem and social support and assistance to people with cerebral palsy
Secondary abstract: People who are close to us have a special place in our lives. Our relationship with them, their support and understanding can play a crucial role in shaping our self-esteem. This relationship is especially important in persons with specific deficits. Due to negative responses from the environment, these may develop poorer self-esteem than persons without deficits. Therefore, we decided to explore the correlation between self-esteem and social support in persons with cerebral palsy. Furthermore, we wished to determine whether there are any differences between persons with cerebral palsy and those without deficits with respect to self-esteem and social support. For this purpose, the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES) and the Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS) were applied. The analysis results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in how the above-mentioned phenomena were expressed in both groups. However, a difference was observed at the support seeking dimension included in the BSSS questionnaire, where we found that persons with cerebral palsy seek more support from the environment. The study suggests that physical disability does not necessarily entail poorer self-esteem in persons with cerebral palsy. Moreover, it confirms the importance of social inclusion for persons with this type of deficits.
