Abstract

Secondary title: Psychoanalysis and narrative analysis of movie Black Swan
Secondary abstract: In my thesis I studied a film Black Swan, psychological thriller, directed by Darren Aronofsky. Film focuses on psychological activity of the main protagonist, ballerina Nina Sayers. In theoretic part I introduced film theory, film language, narrative theory and theoretic concepts of psychoanalysis by two authors that had the biggest impact on psychoanalytic film theory. In second, analytical part, I performed a narrative analysis of film, where I used concepts of structuralist narratology. Then I analysed the film through the concepts of psychoanalysis. Through analysing element of structuralist theory, I reached findings that inner focalization is the key for spectators to get a detailed insight into the mentality of the main protagonist. She is focalized through psychological, emotional, perceptional and cognitive perspective and therefore works as fictional filter through which the spectators see the story. Through the concepts of psychoanalysis I reached findings that characters in the movie work as parts of human psychic apparatus by Freud. Mrs Sayers works as superego, Nina as ego and Lily as id. I discovered that narrative structure and film language play the main role in how the spectators are going to perceive the happenings in the story and that psychoanalysis has helped us give meaning to the events in the story.
