Abstract

Secondary title: Psychometric properties of the Cognitive failures questionnaire in a sample of students
Secondary abstract: Cognitive failures are defined as slips and lapses in simple everyday tasks that a person can usually perform without errors (Broadbent et al., 1982). The most established measure of cognitive failures is the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire CFQ, designed by Broadbent et al. (1982). The questionnaire was translated to Slovene, but psychometric properties of the Slovenian version have not yet been examined. The main aim of the master's thesis is to examine psychometric properties, which include factor structure, reliability, item analysis and correlations with other constructs. The sample included 215 students from different fields of study. Factor structure was examined using exploratory factor analysis (Principal Axis Factoring method and the oblique rotation Oblimin) and confirmatory factor analysis. The results showed that the original one-factor solution of Broadbent et al. (1982) represents the best factor solution from the content and psychometric point of view. The results also show that cognitive failures correlate with neuroticism, anxiety and rumination, however, they are not associated with selective attention and inhibition. Based on the results, we can conclude that the Slovene version of the questionnaire has good psychometric properties and is appropriate for usage. Beside psychometric evaluation and recommendations for application and interpretation of the questionnaire, the findings also have important implications from a research and applicative point of view.
