Abstract

Secondary title: Organist Janez Kranjec and his musical opus
Secondary abstract: Poet, composer, organist and choirmaster, Janez Kranjec, was born in 1932 in Topol, a small village in the vicinity of Begunje pri Cerknici. At the church in Begunje he started to play the organ at the age of 14 and kept this post almost until the end of his life. During his lifetime, Kranjec was a choirmaster to several choirs (among others to the male choir, Tabor) and vocal ensembles, for which he composed a number of pieces. Despite being primarily a self-taught musician, he left a significant mark in the Slovenian Catholic community and local environment as an organist and composer. This is attested by the fact that more than 200 of his religious works were approved to be used during religious services. Moreover, he received a host of awards (ecclesiastical and secular), among them being the highest Catholic honour in Slovenia, i.e. the Sts. Cyril and Methodius honour, and Honorary Citizenship of Cerknica. As a composer, Kranjec left behind a legacy of more than 950 compositions. He mainly created vocal pieces for various choir ensembles. Among his works are religious and secular pieces. In addition, he wrote many of the lyrics for which he composed music, but he also enjoyed writing music for other lyricists. One of his most famous songs is Pojo naj ljude (May the people sing) which is still used as an anthem of the Slovenian Choir Convention taking place annually in Šentvid pri Stični. Another famous piece is Triglavska Marija, ave (Mary of Mt. Triglav, Ave); its lyrics can be seen in the chapel of Our Mary of the Snow at Kredarica and people still sing it during many ceremonies there. In July 2018, we commemorated 10th anniversary of Kranjec's death. To mark the occasion, his family, together with the Municipality of Cerknica, erected a memorial plaque at his childhood home in Topol and hosted a ceremony at its revealing. The ceremony was also an introduction into the Year of Janez Kranjec, a project declared by the Municipality of Cerknica as homage to a deserving fellow citizen.
