Secondary abstract: | I studied the reaction of α-pinene with singlet oxygen for its importance in the environment. α-pinene is oxidised in the atmosphere forming SOA. α-pinene was reacted with singlet oxygen. Singlet oxygen was formed using methylene blue. I developed and optimized a method for the separation of α-pinene and the formed hydroperoxides using HPLC. I compared three different chromatographic columns and determined the most suitable one. I tested the repeatability of the method and calculated the conversion of the reaction. The effect of heat and UV light on hydroperoxides was studied. The hydroperoxides decayed faster under UV light. I observed the effect of ascorbic acid on the formation of dimers of hydroperoxides and discovered that the concentration of dimers is lowered when ascorbic acid is added. The kinetics of the reaction between α-pinene and singlet oxygen was studied. The order of the reaction was determined using the differential method and the integral method. The reaction appears to be zeroth order with regards to α-pinene. |
