Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂrelationship between anxiety, working memory capacity and numerical operation-solving speed
Secondary abstract: A body of research, devoted to exploring a relationship between working memory capacity and mathematical efficiency, yields a robust series of evidence for a significant linear relationship between working memory capacity and mathematical efficiency. The term efficiency invariably refers to the frequency of the correct mathematical camputations or responses, but another crucial aspect of efficiency, namely the time efficiency, is repeatedly overlooked in the scientific literature. Time based resource sharing model of working memory provides a strong rationale for predicting the relationship between working memory capacity and the numerical operation-solving speed. The thesis thereby explores the relationship between the working memory capacity, numerical operation-solving speed and anxiety. Regression analysis show a significant linear relationship between working memory capacity and the numerical operation-solving speed. Furthemore, our results show that, as the complexity - the number of information elements, required to be temporarily stored and manipulated - of the series of mathematical tasks increases, the working memory capacity ultimately explains a bigger proportion of variance in operation-solving speed. The second part of thesis, that explores a relationship between the anxiety and the working memory capacity as well as the relationship between the anxiety and the numerical operation-solving speed, shows no significant linear relationship between the anxiety and the working memory capacity. It also shows no mediating effect of anxiety on numerical operation-solving speed.
