Abstract

Secondary title: Self-healing of polymeric materials based on microcapsules
Secondary abstract: In the last decade the development and production of self-healing polymers increased. Because of their useful properties they are becoming more and more desirable. Two main advantages of this kind of materials are long life span and low cost of repair. Today we know a few different self-healing methodologies, which can be classified as intrinsic or extrinsic. One of the most common techniques for preparing smart polymers is microencapsulation. Microcapsules are small particles made of a core material which contains healing agent and is surrounded by a coating layer which separates the core from polymer matrix. When a crack occurs in a material, it ruptures the microcapsules, leading to the release of the healing agent. The healing agent fills the crack and triggers polymerization of the material, causing its self-healing. This kind of self-healing has a huge potential in commercial use because we can integrate it in a lot of different polymeric systems.
