Abstract

Secondary abstract: In our thesis we examined the relationship between socioeconomic status, overweight and obesity among Slovenian youth. In theoretical part of the thesis we present a review of Slovenian and foreign literature in the field of socioeconomic status, overweight and obesity. In the empirical part we performed a secondary analysis of a representative sample of Slovenian youth aged between 16 and 27 years. Socioeconomic status was measured with several different indicators, including maternal education, paternal education, personal income of adolescent and self-assessed material position of the family. We also analysed several potential determinants which may impact the probability of overweight and obesity among youth in Slovenia. Results show that combined higher parental education does not lower the probability of overweight and obesity, while maternal and paternal education are both associated with lower probability of overweight and obesity. Furthermore, higher personal income of adolescents is associated with higher probability of overweight and obesity, while self-assessed material position of adolescent's family is not statistically significantly associated with overweight and obesity. In addition, higher fruit consumption, higher vegetable consumption, and more frequent physical activities do not lower the probability of overweight and obesity. Alcohol consumption is a statistical significant determinant that increases the likelihood of overweight and obesity, while smoking is not. Furthermore we found out that watching television increases the probability of overweight and obesity. Finally, the results also show that none of the analysed variables mediated (i.e. explained) the relationship between socioeconomic status, overweight and obesity among Slovenian youth.
