Abstract

Secondary title: THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGHT TRAINING IN ENDURO MOUNTIAN BIKING
Secondary abstract: The newest discipline in mountain biking, named »enduro« has attracted racers from different mountain bike disciplines: downhill, cross country and even four cross. Rather than just have one track in a race weekend (like downhill and olympic cross-country), enduro takes place on many different tracks called »stages«. Downhills are timed and count for overall win, up-hills are not but have a timed limit. Riders usually have to pedal up, some times chair-lifts or gondola lifts are used. On Race days, atletes are on their bikes for 6 hours or more therefore endurance training has to be a big part of their training program. But they also need speed for the downhills, strenght to hold on steep parts, sprinting ability for the short climbs inbetween stages and on-point bike handling skills. Because the discipline is so new (first EWS-enduro world series was organised in 2013) the knowledge for getting the right training combination is still unknown to many atletes, also the literature for enduro specific training is very rare to find. The purpase of this thesis is to show how strenght training affects endurance performance in enduro mountain bikers. Few decades ago, there was an strong oppinion that strenght training doesnt work for endurance atletes, mostly due to gaining extra muscle mass. That thinking changed through time. On the second part of this thesis, some training methods on how to improve different kinds of strenght, if done correctly, are presented.
