Abstract

Secondary title: Benefits and weaknesses of raw canine nutrition
Secondary abstract: The shape of canine teeth and gastrointestinal tract tells us that dogs are adapted to ingesting fresh raw food. We know a few types of raw feeding for dogs, but which one to choose for our dog we decide based on the individual and our knowledge. Fresh meals should consist of at least 3 different sources of animal protein and have the correct meat - bone - organ ratio. It is important to include all components in the meal to provide the dog with all nutrients in optimal ratio and amount. The benefits of raw diet for dogs appears to be healthier skin and hair, clean teeth, better immune system, eliminated allergies, reduced gastric distortion, and smaller faeces compared to dry diet. Disadvantages are related to hygiene in the preparation and feeding of raw food. We must pay attention to the proportions, cleanliness of the dog bowl and the appropriate bones that do not harm the dog. Various supplements can be added to the meal to enhance it and, if necessary various vitamins and minerals can be added too. Related to the differences in the composition of the daily meals the chemical composition and nutrient content varies day by day. Analysis of the daily nutrition ration shows that all analysed nutrients are in excess when compared to the NRC norms, except the manganese.
