Abstract

Secondary title: Data security in smart cars
Secondary abstract: Automotive industry development resulted in the development of vehicles that are not merely transportation devices, but have become interconnected contemporary mobile multimedia devices, which connect with one another, with the vehicle user, with the internet, with the manufacturer, as well as other smart devices. Consequently, smart cars became a treasure trove of personal and other data, which on one hand enable the user a safer ride, more comfortable/personalized services, and improved car maintenance, while on the other hand such data also constitutes a potential threat, namely privacy abuse. The purpose of this master thesis is to show the extent of data collection in a smart car, point out the risks related to oversharing of data (or connecting personal mobile devices with other devices in a smart car), review the relevant legislation and the privacy policies of larger vehicle manufacturers, emphasize the pitfalls, and inform the users of smart cars regarding the protection, value, and importance of personal data. The results of the research are presented in the second part of the thesis and display the connections between the level of knowledge regarding cyber security, the awareness level regarding the amount of smart car data collection, and the willingness to forego a part of privacy in return for expected smart car advantages/benefits.
