Abstract

Osebe s shizofrenijo pogosto uporabljajo izogibajoče strategije spoprijemanja s stresom.

Secondary title: Mindfulness, coping strategies, and perceived stress in persons with shizophrenia
Secondary abstract: People with schizophrenia often use avoidant coping strategies. The use of certain strategies may depend on the perception of stress, which is how a person experiences general stress in his/her life (Kaur and Beri, 2017). To reduce stress, it is important to apply problem-oriented coping strategies, where the conscious effort of the individual relating to the concept of mindfulness is crucial. The purpose of the master's thesis was to test the level and correlation of mindfulness, the perceived stress, and the coping strategies in people with schizophrenia compared with people without long-term mental disorders. Our sample included 75 subjects (48 men and 27 women) diagnosed with schizophrenia and 77 subjects (34 men and 43 women) without long-term mental disorders. The questionnaires used were: Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the COPE Inventory. The results showed that mindfulness was lower in subjects with schizophrenia and there was no difference in the perceived stress between the groups. There were also differences between the groups in the expression of nine (out of a total of 15) coping strategies. A negative correlation was found between mindfulness and the perceived stress in people with schizophrenia. Mindfulness is a mediator in the relationship between the problem-focused strategies and the perceived stress in people with schizophrenia.
