Abstract

Secondary title: Terrorism in Turkey: A Case Study of the Terrorist Attacks after 2011
Secondary abstract: The thesis aims to present the terrorism as a threat to the contemporary Republic of Turkey. The number of terrorist attacks has risen in Europe in recent years and it has not been different in Turkey. The history of terrorism in Turkey had started in the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century. That time was marked by the political and social unrest. There were several causes of the instability during that time, including the emerging of the radical Islamic movement as well as the left wing student movement. Terrorist attacks continued in later years when most of the attacks were carried out by different domestic groups. There were three noticeably prevalent ideologies: Kurdish separatism, radical Islamism and Marxism. Many terrorist groups were weakened during the late nineties and in the first years of the twenty-first century due to arrests or deaths of their leaders, and as a consequence terrorist attacks were less frequent and less lethal as in the past. In the recent years it is noticeable that the numbers of attacks are increasing again, mostly due to the Kurdish workers’ party and the Islamic state. Throughout the history there were several occasions when the animosities between the Kurdish workers’ party and the Turkish state ceased but in the majority of cases that did not last long. The last ceasefire lasted two years and after the unsuccessful peace talks in 2015 the conflict escalated again. Common terrorist attacks and unstable political situation caused instability in the tourist industry. The largest drop in tourism was noted in 2016 when the number of tourist visitors dropped by 30.05% compared to the year before.
