Abstract

Teoretična izhodišča: Čustvena inteligenca predstavlja posameznikovo sposobnost prepoznavanja lastnih čustev, obenem pa pomeni ustrezno opredelitev čustev in ustrezen odziv nanje. Raziskovalna metodologija: Izvedli smo presečno deskriptivno študijo, v katero smo vključili 152 članov timov zdravstvene nege iz pediatričnega in internističnega področja. Za preverjanje hipotez smo uporabili testa korelacije in primerjave povprečnih vrednosti neodvisnih vzorcev. Rezultati: V okviru raziskave smo zastavili tri hipoteze. Pomembno je zavedanje pomena čustvene inteligence in izboljšanje komunikacijskih veščin.

Secondary title: Level of emotional intelligence among paediatric nurses
Secondary abstract: Theoretical background: Emotional intelligence represents the individual's ability to recognise their own feelings and define emotions at the same time. Emotional intelligence is crucial for a successful work of nurses in a prerequisite for good quality nursing care. Paediatric nurses should possess high level of emotional intelligence in order to successfully work with sick children. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of emotional intelligence among paediatric nurses. Research methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was used in the survey that included 152 registered nurses (with first and second degree) and nursing technicians from paediatric and internal field of nursing. To verify the hypotheses, we used both correlation and comparison of mean value for independent samples tests. The results: In the framework of our study we set three hypotheses. Our first hypothesis was rejected, since there is no statistically significant difference between level of emotional intelligence of nurses from paediatric and internal field of nursing (p = 0,286 and p = 0,299). The second hypothesis was rejected, since there is no link between nurses’ emotional intelligence level and their work experiences (p = 0,510 and p = 0,505). The third hypothesis was also rejected. We concluded that there is no link between the level of nurses’ education and the level of emotional intelligence (p = 0,160 and p = 0,435). Conclusion: Appropriate level of paediatric nurses’ emotional intelligence is essential for working with sick children. Emotionally intelligent nurse can successfully reduce child’s stress when admitted in hospital. There is a constant need for improving the level of emotional intelligence among paediatric nurses. Using good communication techniques is also crucial in order to strengthen the level of nurses’ emotional intelligence.
