Abstract

Groundwater Flow Modelling of the Aquifer Međimurje with the Program FREEWAT |
Secondary abstract: |
In the underground of Međimurje there is an important drinking water reservoir, which is of strategic significance because it serves to supply 90% of Međimurje inhabitants with natural and purified water on three groundwater pumping stations. The supply source of the aquatic system is the Drava river. The groundwater of the Prelog pumping station is the anthropogenic most burdened, so it is important to pay a lot of attention to the protection of the spring. By developing a model of the groundwater flow we may predict the spreading of pollution in aquifers, which may then be used as a basis for action, before contamination reaches the water catchment and significantly reduces the quality of drinking water. The groundwater flow model was created using the FREEWAT software and for that, it was necessary to collect data about the geometry of aquifer, hydrogeological parameters that affect the groundwater flow and to determine boundary conditions. With the conceptual model developed, groundwater flow was simulated for three different periods, 2005, 2011 and 2014. Obtained simulations were used as a basis for simulations of particle tracking to determine the impact of potential groundwater contamination, which could threaten groundwater, which is being pumped by the Nedelišće and Prelog pumping stations. The simulation results show that the potential contamination does not affect the groundwater that is being pumped at the Nedelišće pumping station, but in the area of Prelog several locations can potentially affect the quality of groundwater that is being pumped at the Prelog pumping station. |
