Abstract

Secondary title: Scientific claims and chemistry class in primary school
Secondary abstract: The purpose of the Master's thesis is to establish whether elementary school students differentiate between scientific and non scientific claims, and whether the use of scientific criteria is effective. The research was carried out on 31 eighth and ninth graders. Each student had to take a test which consisted of ten claims that had to be classified as scientific or non scientific based on their own judgement. The test was followed by a discussion in which we defined six scientific criteria that students had to use to classify ten other claims as scientific or non scientific. The research results show that there are no statistically significant differences in test performance between eighth and ninth graders and between the tests, After having discussed with the students, we found out that they have many misconceptions. We therefore advise teachers to put more emphasis on discussing scientific and non scientific claims, as well as to encourage students in their education paths to express their own opinion and ideas, as this is the only way for them to better understand science and develop a critical thinking of adult society.
