Abstract

Secondary title: The improtance of preventing infections in a patient with a permanent urinary catheter
Secondary abstract: Theoretical starting points: One of the basic functions of the normal operating of the uropoietic tract is the normal excretion of urine from the body. When it comes to a blockage of the ureter or urethra, and consequently to a dysfunction in the urine output because of several different disease signs, the use of a permanent urinary catheter is a common solution for urinary output. The purpose of our research was to determine what knowledge the employees from the field of health care have for preventive operation, handling of a urine catheter and for performing measures to prevent infections in a patient with a permanent urinary catheter. Methodology: In the final part we have used quantitative and descriptive method of work. We used an anonymous questionnaire as a research instrument. The study involved 42 nursing employees in the surgery departments of a selected hospital. The results we obtained were analyzed and processed using computer programs: Microsoft Office Word and IBM SPSS 22.0. Results: Based on the analysis, we found that there were no statistically significant differences in the level of knowledge among nursing employees in the field of health care. From this, we can conclude that the nursing employees of the surgical department are well acquainted with the standards and procedures of work, and at the same time, they show a desire for additional professional education, conducting workshops on the topic of catheterization of the patient, and thus follow the novelties. Discussion and conclusion: A permanent urinary catheter presents an important risk factor for infection. It is important that nursing staff adhere to the agreed standards and guidelines for work, so that only in this way they can ensure a professionally safe procedure for the patient.
