magistrsko delo
Abstract

Anxiety, stress, self-efficacy and social support in the light of students' experience of living abroad |
Secondary abstract: |
Spending time studying at college means exploring your potential and developing into a competent individual, who will cope with the obstacles that await in the future. The experience of studying abroad offers young people the opportunity to leave their comfort zone and take a step, which helps them to become more autonomous in learning about themselves and their capacity to cope with obstacles. The purpose of master's thesis was to investigate, if the experience of living abroad (or absence of it) during a time in college leads to differences between students in levels of stress, anxiety, self-efficacy and strategies of coping with stress and what is the predictive value of social support for these constructs. The research included 278 participants (students or young people, who recently graduated), including 193 women (69 %) in 85 men (31 %), between the ages of 22 and 27. The average age of the participants was 25 years. There were 37 % of those who stayed abroad for at least six months while studying in college. The results showed that the individuals, who had the experience of living abroad during their time in college, had lower levels of anxiety and higher levels of self-efficacy. The individuals with the experience of living abroad and the ones without it did not differ in the level of perceived stress. Social support negatively predicts levels of stress and anxiety and positively predicts self-efficacy. Individuals who have the experience of living abroad, were more likely to use problem focused strategies of coping with stress than those, who did not have the experience of living abroad. Our results showed that problem focused strategies of coping with stress predict the level of self-efficacy. In addition, we foung that there are no differences in the level of social support between individuals who have the experience of living abroad and those who do not. We also found that students, who lived abroad, frequently use avoidance strategies when dealing with stress. |
